Secrets to Preserving Your Clothes in Like-New Condition

Recently, I re-organized my closet. I threw away the clothes that couldn’t be worn anymore, donated the stuff that could be worn, but wouldn’t by me anymore, and bought an entire haul of end of the year, clearance clothes to replace the old and augment my selection of mostly winter, warm clothes. I have to say that both my closet and my wardrobe are pretty incredible now.

I have a walk-in closet and I notice that after a while, the clothes get dusty from just sitting there, so I bought on Amazon these garment covers for protection and I couldn’t be happier with the results. My clothes are organized and clean and I can see through the plastic windows exactly what I have in there. I highly recommend them. They are sturdy and high quality and they are easily attached and secured to the bar on your closet with heavy duty velcro flaps.

By purchasing any of the following products from the affiliate links on this page, you are helping to support my blog, so thank you in advance. I use and have purchased these with my own money and I only recommend them to you because they work great for me.

Here’s a photo inside my closet with the three hanging garment covers.

A game-changing Amazon find that I have now purchased twice is Nellie’s Laundry Soda. This could be my greatest Amazon recommendation ever. It’s got 4.7 stars with almost 9,000 ratings, so I’m not the only one who believes that this product provides both value and effectiveness. I used to always use liquid detergent. However, now I realize that the powder saves money because as Nellie’s advertises, you avoid paying for the water ingredient that takes up much of the liquid detergent bottle. It leaves my clothes cleaner and softer than ever before and without the residue on my dark clothes like I had experienced with liquid detergents; even those meant for dark clothes like the Woolite Dark Defense detergent. Also, I was very successful cleaning 100% silk and 100% wool garments with it, but you should test it out on a small area first.

I use Nellie’s Laundry soda for both hand washing clothes in the sink and also in my high efficiency washing machine. Currently, I wash almost all of my outerwear that I care about preserving by hand in the sink and then line drying it in my shower. I installed a clothing line in the shower like in a hotel. I only use the washing machine for underwear, socks, and undershirts. Clothing just seems to deteriorate faster when you put it in the washing machine and dryer.

Furthermore, dryer sheets are full of nasty chemicals and synthetic smelling fragrances and I have replaced using them with these wool dryer balls that help to both speed up the drying process and aid in keeping out the wrinkles. The main culprit fading the colors from your garments and destroying the material is the heat from the dryer. The main advantage of these dryer balls is that they enable you to lower the heat and still have the clothes dry in the same amount of time.

When I handwash my clothes and line dry them, many times I’m left with wrinkled fabric. I recently handwashed a sportscoat from Banana Republic with the Nellie’s soda, instead of taking it to the dry cleaners which I would have done in the past. However, I also now avoid them because of the harsh chemicals they utilize. Recently, I was made aware that in Europe they don’t have dry cleaners and almost nobody uses dryers because the cost of electricity is so high. I haven’t seen any sociological studies to prove my hypothesis, however, I believe it creates a better sense of community when you know your neighbors’ underpants because you’ve seen them hanging to dry on a line outside.

I have a solution for wrinkles as well. I have been using this steamer for a while now and I highly recommend it for its quick warm-up, portability, and effectiveness. I try to use my steamer instead of my iron because I can easily go over it while it’s hanging rather than use an ironing board, which requires learning ironing techniques that can take some practice and effort. Surprisingly, I also find it calming to use this machine as I paint my clothing with steam and watch the wrinkles vanish. I’m like the Bob Ross of wrinkle removing with this contraption.
