The King and I Have The Same Taste In Watches

On December 13, 2024, Christie’s auction house sold a Mathey-Tissot, previously owned by Elvis Presley, gold plated, stainless steel, day and date, for $12,600, substantially more than its estimated worth.

Christie’s auction house details.

“The king himself, Elvis Presley, commissioned the customization of a few dozen Mathey-Tissot watches for close friends and family. The gold-plated automatic watches, which were customised directly by Mathey-Tissot, have the name Elvis Presley emblazoned on the bezel around the edge of the dial. They came with a certificate signed by one of Elvis’ entourage, explaining that the watch entitled the owner to exclusive access to the king’s inner circle, including front gates, backstage, and all points in between.” (Quote is from the article, “The impressive history and precarious future of Mathey-Tissot” by Adam Reeder, online at timeandtidewatches.com)

It seems that Elvis was also a value shopper and could spot a good deal when he saw one.

I stumbled upon this brand when I was looking for a quality, analog, quartz movement watch with a sapphire glass crystal, and a date display. Those were my specific needs, and particularly important to me is the sapphire glass for scratch resistance protection. Not only did I find those specifications, but on top of it, these watches are Swiss made, which is a sign of high quality craftsmanship. I find that the Mathey-Tissot’s brand makes beautiful watches, with historical significance, and provides value throughout their collection at various price points.

Jomashop is a legit, trusted, and established online retailer of watches and fragrances at discount prices, and is where I bought my Mathey-Tissot.

When I was searching for this watch, I wanted a green dial and a leather band. I find metal bracelets to be uncomfortable; they can be cold, rigid, and sometimes catch the hair on your wrists, and tend to be more expensive as well. I find the green sunburst dial and the green leather strap on this watch to be quite exquisite. Again, purple and green are my favorite colors, so this watch fits perfectly into my wardrobe. Even though it’s an affordable watch, I find it to be very classy and I wear it out to nice restaurants, especially in the daytime when the dial pops in the sunlight.

Mathey-Tissot Urban Quartz Green Dial Men's Watch Item No. H411AV. I was happy when I paid $120 for this watch, which is now on sale for $69 plus taxes and $5.99 shipping.

Additionally, I just noticed while browsing the Jomashop site that there are different versions of this watch with various complications and features: a moon phase ($79), moon phase with arabic dial ($99.99) and a chronograph version ($127).
